God's Judgment and Compassion
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment (Hebrews 9:27)
God’s Judgment
The bible explicitly states that each of us will die and face God’s judgment…
…and they were judged every man according to their works (Revelation 20:13)
We have sinned against God and bear the guilt of our sin. Our works (doing good deeds) will not save us from the lake of fire. We must be reconciled¹ to God. Why? Because...
God is holy. God is the only holy being. This means He is moral, pure and just (righteous).
We have offended God with our sin.
Being just, God cannot and will not ignore our sin.
God’s Law demands punishment for what we have done.
Eternity in the lake of fire is the price that must be paid for our sin against God.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)
God’s Compassion
In addition to being holy, God is also...
Gracious
Merciful
Compassionate
Forgiving
Loving
Kind
Patient
“As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live” (Ezekiel 33:11).
In grace and mercy, God determined to reconcile us to Himself by providing a substitute for us. He Himself would bear our punishment through the sacrifice of Himself. In love, He would come to earth and die in our place in the person of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ would live a sinless life and then die on a cross, a perfect sacrifice for sin. In this way, He paid for our sin so we will not have to pay in the lake of fire.
Jesus Christ is God incarnate (in human flesh).
And being found in fashion (appearance) as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. (Philippians 2:8)
Who is Jesus Christ?
Jesus Christ is God, the only-begotten Son.
Jesus Christ is God incarnate (in human flesh).
Jesus Christ is the One God sent to reconcile us to Himself.
”For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
¹ Reconciled – brought into friendship from a state of hostility, enmity, or hatred
